The ability to read greens like the pros isn’t a mystical gift, it’s a learned skill.  This article will give you the knowledge that you need, and then we’ll give you a great drill for developing your green reading skills to world-class levels.

 

There are three key skills that you need to be a great putter:  sound mechanics, good touch, and the ability to read the green.

If you can consistently start the ball on line, then your basic mechanics are good – if not then we’ll give you some help in other articles.

Good touch, consistent distance control, comes from developing and maintaining your rhythm, as discussed in How to Improve Your Touch and Consistency on the Greens.

If you have a good stroke and rhythm, then most of putting just takes care of itself – the ball will seem to just keep finding the hole, time after time.

However, factors such as break and green conditions certainly do play a very significant factor, and the better that you can read them, the lower your scores will be…
