Putting Drill 401. Green Reading

0

This is a great drill for improving your ability to read putts.

Just making a few putts around the practice green isn’t enough to improve your green reading skills.  As we described in Putting 401 – Green Reading: How to Improve Your Green Reading Skills and Make More Putts, it is likely that your subconscious mind is correcting for you, even when you get the read wrong – sinking a putt doesn’t necessarily mean that your read was correct!

We’re sorry to have to tell you this, but your green reading probably isn’t as good as you think it is, and this is one of the main causes of inconsistency, especially under pressure.

When you aim too low, as most golfers do, your subconscious mind will either make you pull or push the putt back onto the true aim line, or hit it harder to compensate.  And you may well make the putt – your subconscious is really good at what it does.

But this subconscious compensation will disrupt your stroke mechanics and your rhythm, and you’ll quickly lose your touch.  Under pressure, you’ll be waging an inner battle that will probably cause you to leave the putt short or race it past the hole.

This drill works by testing your read and confirming when you get it right – thus reaffirming your ability, and ingraining the feeling of seeing the true break on a putt.

To be a great putter, you need to develop your ability to gather information (both consciously and subconsciously), your analytical skills and your intuition.

You must marry your conscious read with your intuitive one.  Not only do you need to read the greens more accurately, but you need to be able to trust yourself, to avoid destructive doubts and second-guessing yourself, and thus to avoid tension and to maintain your rhythm.

Great green reading requires input from both The Learner and The Player, and both must be aligned so that you can become a more natural, instinctive golfer.  This will improve your touch and feel on and around the greens, you’ll enable your inner athlete, and you’ll make a whole lot more putts!
